I Don't Understand

Social Media is a place to connect with your friends.

Social Media is a place to connect with brands you love.

Social Media is a place to connect with celebrities you idolize.

These things all make sense to me. They are why I use Social Media. So this is what I don't understand:

I recently started following some celebrities in a band that has a fairly young fan base. I followed their personal accounts on Twitter and 60 seconds later I had six new followers from complete strangers. Why do they want to follow me?! It quite honestly makes no sense to me and it creeps me out a little. I know I can put my account on private, but then nobody could retweet me (which obvi happens SO often...).

I just don't understand the point. Do they think we're going to become best friends because we follow the same band? Do they think I have some connection to the band? Do they just want more followers? I'm honestly not sure. It's one of Social Media's mysteries for me. I'm really sorry, but I don't want to see what a 12 year old girl tweets on a daily basis.
